Huizinga Project Director, BSU TRiO Pre-College Programs Boise State University 1910 University Drive Boise, ID 83725 Dear Sue: I am happy to recommend Melissa Moore for your educational specialist position with the Boise State University Educational Talent Search. Ms. Moore is bright, energetic, committed to studentsТ success and experienced with TriO programs. As the counselor in the Student Support Services Program at Centralia College from 10/89-8/02, I worked closely with Ms. Moore since she was hired by SSS in March 2001. I have also kept in touch with her over this past year here at The Evergreen State College where I work now and she is taking classes towards a master in public administration degree. Ms. Moore has significant experience working with students from grade school through college. As a day care provider for a community agency, she has developed the strategies and experience to supervise kids, keep them interested in activities, and relate to them one-to-one and in-group settings. Through her employment with Western Washington University, Whatcom Community College and South Puget Sound Community College, she has worked to plan and develop programs and encouraged leadership among student government leaders and international students. With her positions in Student Support Services at Centralia College, Melissa has developed a solid foundation of knowledge about college policies and procedures, and continued to develop her skills in assessing students and providing appropriate service. When Melissa was hired by SSS at Centralia College, she was the Уfront desk personФ and she ably demonstrated her ability to judge students, asking sensible, sensitive and clarifying questions to determine their interests and needs (did he/she need a piece of information? a sounding board? a referral or appointment? a word of encouragement?), and always treated them with sincere interest as individuals she was welcome to see, rather than as intrusions. Students gravitated to her warmth, humor and helpfulness. Melissa remembered studentsТ names and plans, and she found herself recruiting students to reactivate a participantsТ committee for the program. With her promotion into a student success specialist position, Melissa has been able to provide more in-depth assistance to SSS participants, assisting them with clarifying academic and career goals, helping them explore financial aid and college admission options, and giving them ideas on study skills. She has tracked her studentsТ progress to graduation, and even started the SSS graduation banquet. Melissa has been a real asset to SSS not only for her relational abilities, but also for her organizational and planning abilities. She revamped the programТs database, increased the efficiency of tracking student information, and improved the programТs file management. She has assisted with grant preparation and reports, and has successfully planned and implemented cultural and college visit field trips. Melissa has always been cooperative and collegial, willing to provide input, but also willing to listen and share tasks among staff members and on college committees. She is a quick learner, and aware of student development theory from her BA in human services, her practical experiences, and her graduate coursework. Melissa understands and supports the mission of TRiO programs, and has experience herself as a low income, first generation college student struggling to complete a degree while working tow part-time jobs to support herself and keep her loan debt down. IТm confident her skills would be transferable to BSUТs Talent Search Program, and she would be able to relate well to middle school and high school students (as the older sister of a brother five years younger than herself, she found her brotherТs friends often hanging out and seeking her guidance). I would be happy to provide further information about MelissaТs qualifications anytime, and can be reached at work by phone or email days, or at home in the evenings at (360) 352-5733 or HYPERLINK "mailto:Foranfam4@cs.com" Foranfam4@cs.com.
