I do believe I was too hard on Michael in the email I wrote, even though that is exactly how I felt at the time I wrote it. The subject of Sunday's class was racism. There were comments made by some other students that triggered my anxiety, and when I tried to explain things from a non native point of view, I felt like I was was immediately shut down by Michael. I felt like he was sending out the message that racism only exists when it is white people being the racists, and that I could not possibly understand white privilege and power because I am white. I do realize that was very unfair of me to assume, and that was not his message, nor his intent. Michael has been more than understanding of my severe anxiety, and he has been very careful to make me feel like I am a welcome part of the cohort. After taking a few days to reflect on what happened and how I handled the situation, I realize that I am being a little bit too sensitive and need to stop taking things in class so personally! I guess I just felt like with a topic that controversial, it would have been fair of him to give the class a heads up and let each of us choose to participate in the discussion or not, so as not to trigger anxiety or negative reactions. I do not feel that he was discriminating against me in anyway, and I stand by my opinions that he is an amazing instructor. I was just very caught off guard by the discussion as a whole, and was made to feel like everyone in the cohort has the right to speak freely except me. I did not leave class because I was offended by any student or faculty, but because the subject matter triggered an epic anxiety attack, mostly because racism between Natives and Whites has had a very large impact on my personal life. I was once married to an amazing Native man and ended up divorced and not being allowed to raise my own daughter due to racism between the two families. Also, I am highly emotional and sensitive when it comes to the horrible things the Natives have endured by the Whites over the last few centuries, it literally breaks my heart and makes me take on an enormous feeling of guilt, to where it is hard for me to sit there and listen without my anxiety being triggered, if that makes any sense to you. I am okay now, I just had to remove myself from the situation. I did send out an apology to the cohort via the FB group, and the support I got from the other students in the cohort was very comforting. I believe this was a case of me letting my anxieties and personal emotions get in the way of my own learning opportunities and I am not proud of how I handled the situation at all. Thank you so much for for your concern, I have never been a part of a program where the faculty and instructors care so genuinely for the students, it is pretty amazing. Thank you so much! Hey Brianne,

Michael stopped by my office earlier this morning and inquired about you, are you ok? Is there anything I can do to assist you with? Your faculty mentioned to me that you left class on Sunday and he stated that you had communicated with him at length your concerns. He has not shared that information with me nor does he have to, I want to support you however I can. Would you like for me to set up a phone conference between you and I? I respect all of our students and it is my responsibility to support them to the best of my ability. I am here for you if you need me.

Sincerely, Puanani
