He is dedicated to his craft (teaching English literature). He cares passionately about literature, not in a dry aesthetic fashion but in the gritty real world way. He selects challenging books for his students to read like John Gardner’s Grendel and Tim O’Brien’s the Things they Carried- books that shake up a highs school senior’s sense of his or her world and show them that America’s suburbia is not universal, that thw world is darker stranger and more full of glorious possibilities than they had imagined. He uses literature to help students examine their own lives and enlarge their view of the world. Mr. Chandler is endlessly patient with stumbling student teachers. He is a reliable resource and an able assistant, with a gift for vanishing at the right moment, when a fledgling teacher needs to be on his own. He assists in eastablishing ground rules and work-day practices, grade books and scheduling, then stands back and lets a student teacher learn by doing. Mr. Cahndler is courteous. Tjis may seem faint praise, but it is not. His courtesy to his students is part of his teaching style, and they respond to it by being courteous in return. This courtesy is extended by the students to the guest teachers, as well, and serves as a scoail lubricant in all classroom interactions. Mr. Chandler courtesy was one of the muses of ancient Greece and that the other arts cannot flourish without her. I could teach what I wanted how I wanted even if he already had something planned. He is nice and patient and laughs a lot. He graduated from TESC (in Sherry’s cycle) so he is pretty up to date on what is expected of us. Joel also has a good relationship with many of the other teachers he works with so they all became a support team for me. Suggestions: Sometimes I felt as if Joel couldn’t give me the time or attention I needed because he is pulled in many directions. Besides being a teacher he is also a new dad and the computer wizard at the school. Because of this he usually had to leave right after school and or leave the classroom a lot. I think that this also helped me in jumping in and taking over and I also think that this will get smoothed out more as the year goes on.
